León became the first destination in Mexico to obtain Destination Certification within the program. Certificate of Global Competitiveness (CCG) by PCO Meetings, This recognition distinguishes the level of competitiveness and professionalism achieved by the members of its value chain from the Meeting Industry.
Under the vision of the Governor of the People, Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, the Secretariat of Tourism and Identity (SECTURI) recognizes the importance of continuing to work on strengthening the strategic tourism segments for Guanajuato, by joining efforts with destinations and service providers. Through the Guanajuato SUMA strategy, the sector is being promoted to coordinate and professionalize in order to increase the competitiveness of our destinations, generate new business opportunities, and consolidate the state as a national benchmark in the Meetings Industry.
The Ceremony of Declaration of Destination León Certification took place at the Querétaro Pavilion, as part of the National Congress of the Meeting Industry (CNIR) 2026, one of the most important meetings in Mexico; with the presence of representatives from PCO Meetings México, members of the CCG Community, authorities from León and Guanajuato, representatives of industry associations, hotel chains, and special guests.
The Global Competitiveness Certificate is a model developed by PCO Meetings México that recognizes companies and destinations that comply with good practices aligned with the standards considered relevant by professional organizers of conferences and meeting planners for selecting, contracting, and operating an event.
The process involves specialized evaluation and the accompaniment of consultants, based on eight guiding principles that allow identifying strengths and areas of opportunity to continuously improve the competitiveness of companies and institutions linked to the industry.
It should be noted that today, the meeting industry must be recognized for its real impact, as it represents more than 443 billion pesos per year, equivalent to 1.84% of the national Gross Domestic Product.
León, the first certified destination in Mexico
Obtaining the destination certification is the result of the joint work of companies and institutions that make up the value chain of León, including hotels, DMC companies, Meeting Planners, specialized service providers, Poliforum León as the venue, and the City Council of León as the promoting body.
In this way, recognition does not only belong to a company or venue, but to the tourism and meeting ecosystem of the destination, which has worked continuously to professionalize itself and adopt best practices.
This process is based on the various Pro CCG programs, in their first, second and third editions, as well as the support of specialized consultants who participated in the preparation and evaluation of the aspiring companies and institutions.
As part of the business certification stage, 20 participants underwent the evaluation process and 16 reached the minimum required score, crediting their alignment with the eight guiding axes of the model.
With this result, León joins the CCG Elite Community, together with the certified companies and institutions that make up its value chain, strengthening its positioning among professional organizers of congresses, conventions, incentives and corporate events.
A recognition of León's competitiveness
This certification represents support for the work carried out by León to enhance its capabilities as a meeting destination and strengthen aspects such as governance, reputation, competitiveness, and destination management.
In terms of tourism, this recognition provides greater certainty to those seeking venues for congresses, conventions, exhibitions, and incentive trips, by certifying that the destination has actors who have participated in a verification and improvement process under the specialized standards of the industry.
The certification has a validity of two years, after which a renewal process is contemplated to verify the fundamental requirements and those aspects that require strengthening.
Guanajuato strengthens its meeting industry
For Guanajuato, this recognition also represents a step forward in consolidating its position within the Meetings Industry, one of the strategic segments for the state's tourism industry.
The Government of the People and the Secretariat of Tourism and Identity are promoting the coordination between destinations, venues, companies and service providers to strengthen the capacities that allow hosting events of different sizes and generating benefits for the entire tourism chain; therefore, we believe that this CNIR should help us elevate the conversation around five priorities: competitiveness, professionalization, measurement, sustainability, and innovation.
Because in the Government of the People we are convinced that these issues are not independent. They are part of a single vision: building a more competitive industry, more prepared and with greater capacity to influence Mexico’s future.
